Our Join Birding Trips offer another way to explore Chiang Dao and Northern Thailand with Guide SunTan.
Trips are offered on selected scheduled dates, allowing solo birdwatchers, couples and travelling companions to join a small group and share the birding experience and travel costs.
Unlike a Private Birding Tour, where dates and itineraries can be arranged around your own interests, Join Birding Trips follow pre-scheduled dates and general routes.
However, the daily birding plan is intentionally kept flexible. Rather than following a rigid itinerary regardless of conditions, birding locations and timing can be adjusted according to current bird activity, recent field observations, seasonal movements, weather and local conditions.
Small group sizes make this flexibility possible and allow us to spend more time where the birding is most productive.
Who Are Join Birding Trips For?
Join Birding Trips are particularly suitable for:
- Solo birdwatchers looking to join other birders
- Couples who are happy to share the trip with another birder
- Visitors travelling to or already staying in Chiang Dao
- Birdwatchers with flexible travel dates

- Birdwatchers who prefer having accommodation, transportation and other trip arrangements organised in advance on selected multi-day trips

Flexible Birding Based on Current Conditions
Local Field Knowledge Makes the Difference
One of the strengths of birding with a local field guide is the ability to adapt the trip to what is actually happening in the field at that time.
Bird activity can change throughout the season.
A location that was productive a few days or weeks ago may become quiet, while another area may suddenly become interesting because of migration, feeding activity, flowering or fruiting trees, seasonal movements or recent bird observations.
For this reason, our Join Birding Trips are not designed around a rigid hour-by-hour itinerary.
The general route and main destinations are planned in advance, but the exact birding locations, stops and timing may be adjusted according to:
- Current bird activity
- Recent field observations
- Seasonal movements
- Weather conditions
- Flowering and fruiting conditions
- Road and access conditions
- Other useful information from the field
This flexibility allows us to spend our time where the birding opportunities are best rather than visiting a location simply because it appears on a fixed itinerary.
The route gives us direction — the birds and field conditions help determine the daily plan.
This flexible field approach is an important part of birding with Guide SunTan and applies to both Join Birding Trips and Private Birding Tours.
As with all wildlife experiences, birds are wild and sightings of particular species cannot be guaranteed.
One-Day & Multi-Day Join Birding Trips
Join Birding Trips may include both one-day birding trips starting from Chiang Dao and selected multi-day birding packages.
Depending on the season, current bird activity and scheduled route, destinations may include:
Chiang Dao • Doi Kham Fah • Doi Ang Khang • Doi Lang West
Other locations may also be considered when current bird activity or field conditions make them a better choice.
The general destination is scheduled in advance, while individual birding locations and daily timing remain flexible.
Multi-Day Join Birding Packages
Selected multi-day Join Birding Trips are designed to make travelling and birding as simple and convenient as possible.
Depending on the individual trip, packages may include:
- Accommodation
- Meals
- Transportation during the scheduled trip
- Professional birding guide
- Birding gear and spare binoculars when required
- Entrance fees and applicable local fees
- Accident insurance
A scheduled multi-day route may, for example, combine:
Chiang Dao → Doi Ang Khang → Doi Lang West → Chiang Dao
Participants may arrive in Chiang Dao before the main birding program begins, allowing time to relax, enjoy the natural surroundings and prepare for an early start the following morning.
The general route provides the framework for the trip, while the daily birding plan remains flexible according to current conditions in the field.

Small Groups, Better Birding
Join Birding Trips are intentionally kept small.
A smaller group allows us to move more easily between birding locations, respond quickly when conditions change and minimise unnecessary disturbance to birds and their habitat.
Group size may vary depending on the particular trip and transportation arrangements. The maximum number of participants is clearly shown in each scheduled event.
Our focus remains on providing a comfortable, responsible and bird-focused field experience, rather than operating large group tours.
Join Birding Trip or Private Birding Tour?
Both options follow the same field-based birding approach, but they are designed for different types of travellers.
Choose a Join Birding Trip if you are happy to:
- Travel on selected scheduled dates
- Follow a predetermined general route
- Share the guide and transportation with a small number of other birdwatchers
- Take advantage of a straightforward per-person package price
Choose a Private Birding Tour if you prefer:
- Your own travel dates
- Greater flexibility in trip duration
- A trip designed around your own group
- Specific target birds or particular birding areas
- More flexibility in destinations and the overall itinerary
